I don't know much about PixelBender effects, but this seems like something that could be accomplished. I am not even sure what keywords to use on Google to search for such an example. So, if you know of an example of how that effect might be accomplished in Flex using PixelBender (or without using PixelBender) I would really like to see it.

I think it`s called Genie effect.

@Benz - Thanks - Just knowing it is called the Genie effect helps. One of the comments on that blog directed me to http://www.dasprinzip.com/prinzipiell/2009/01/30/warp-shader-pixel-bender/ which seems like it is on the right track. I just don't quite get how to translate that into exactly what I am looking for.
@Ian - Theres something about that example that makes me fell it isn't the best way to do it.
